Therapists at Sikhona are specifically trained in the systems dynamics of relationships and models of care that consider the biological, emotional, social, and psychological contributors to our clients’ stresses and strengths. We provide trauma-informed care to couples, individuals, adolescents, and families in Lincoln and throughout Nebraska via telehealth
Our holistic, person-centered approach to therapy allows us to meet our clients where they are and create a space where they can truly heal. Please see individual therapist bios for specializations, including couples therapy, trauma care (EMDR), perinatal mood and relationship support, and grief and loss therapy.
Therapeutic Yoga
All of our yoga (asana) group classes and individual sessions are trauma-informed and themed sequences that focus on particular therapeutic needs. While some classes will really have you breaking a sweat (especially for those classes themed around anxiety alleviation and anger release), most are focused on supporting participants in learning how to notice their bodies, thoughts, and emotions without judgement; how to honor what their bodies can do without comparison to others; how to embrace imperfection with compassion, and how to breathe through challenge with confidence.
Group classes are available as well as individual sessions (individually crafted asana flows, pranayama techniques, and a meditation for a client’s specific needs). Please see the calendar for class schedules. Email Vanessa directly for an individual therapeutic yoga session OR a "For Your Pod" experience.
“For Your Pod” is an opportunity to have an in-person group class with friends or family you feel safe with! Up to 5 students total allowed. Email to schedule a time that works for you and your “Pod” rather than choosing from public class times!
Reiki
Reiki (“ray-key”) is a body-mind-spirit healing practice that began in Japan. During a Reiki session, the practitioner channels universal energy through gentle hand movements for the purpose of adjusting the client’s vibrations. Similar to tuning a guitar to match a pitch, the client’s systems synchronize with the incoming Reiki energy. Tuning up your vibrational frequency by removing blockages and restoring the natural flow increases vitality, balances emotions, and improves health.
Reiki treatments have been linked to a range of physical and emotional benefits, including: better sleep, improved mood, pain relief, and lower blood pressure. Because it promotes relaxation and activates the body’s own healing processes, Reiki energy healing is complimentary to other forms of treatment. Reiki is frequently used by people navigating stressful life events like divorce, surgery, or a cancer diagnosis. It’s also used on a maintenance basis to maintain optimal function and feelings of well-being.
Belief is not required for Reiki energy healing to be effective. As a result, energy work benefits special populations such as infants and very young children, people who are unconscious, even animals. Reiki is gentle and safe for all ages. It is not tied to any specific nationality or religion, and is not associated with religious practice.
Traditionally during sessions, the client relaxes on a comfortable, padded massage table. If you have physical restrictions (Ex -pregnant), Reiki can be given while you remain seated in a chair. To get the most out of your session, plan to wear comfortable clothes and leave heavy jewelry at home. You will be asked to remove your shoes, but otherwise you’ll remain fully clothed. A light blanket, bolster, etc. will be available for your comfort.
Hypnotherapy
Hypnotherapy is a goal-oriented mindfulness technique that uses a state of focused attention and heightened awareness to help clients improve their lives. If your mind was a camera, being in hypnosis is like temporarily switching to the telephoto lens. People have leveraged this natural mental ability in various ways for thousands of years. The Mayo Clinic has utilized hypnosis for more than 120 years. Modern hypnotherapy was recognized by the American Medical Association in 1958, and has been endorsed by the American Psychological Association since 1960.
Forget what you’ve seen on TV or in the movies. During a hypnotherapy session, you are always awake, aware, and in control. Hypnosis sessions utilize Alpha and Theta brainwaves. Human beings naturally cycle in and out of these patterns all day long. If you’ve ever been so engrossed while watching Netflix you didn’t hear someone ask you a question, or driven home only to realize you don’t remember the trip, you’ve been in a hypnotic (aka “trance”) state.
Approximately 5% of your mind--- the Conscious Mind--- is logical, rational, verbal, and time oriented. It is the thinking mind. Its job is to process and work with the exterior world. The other 95% is your powerful Subconscious Mind. It is intuitive, emotional, visual, and timeless. The Subconscious is the feeling/knowing/reactive mind. Its job is to manage your interior world and protect you from harm. When you’re feeling stuck, chances are your Conscious and Subconscious are not cooperating.
Regression hypnotherapy is a structured process which typically takes 3-5 sessions. In session 1, we’ll talk about what hypnosis can/cannot do, clarify and set goals, and do some simple assessments to gauge how flexible your mind is. Subsequent sessions are where the transformational work happens.
